Kutchi Dabeli – The Indian Burger

Gujarat is famous for its number of dishes such thepla, dhokla, khandvi, puran poli, handvo, etc. But there is one dish of Gujarat that comes from Kutch region and has gained popularity all over India. This dish is known as Kutchi Dabeli. It is one of the most famous street foods of India.

The stuffing of boiled potatoes and masala is pressed between two buns hence it is called ‘Dabeli’ because Dabeli means ‘pressed’ in Gujarati language. Boiled potatoes are mashed with Dabeli masala, which is a mixture of several spices such as dried red-chillies, black-pepper powder, dried coconut, salt, clove, cinnamon, coriander, cumin, turmeric, elachi, , black-salt, Indian bay leaf (tej-patta) and other garam masalas. Kutchi Dabeli is most commonly served with dips/chutneys, which is prepared from tamarind, date, garlic, red chillies. Kutchi Dabeli is always garnished with pomegranate, roasted peanuts and sev that give it the authentic look as well as taste.

History of Dabeli
There is also an interesting history behind the invention of Kutchi Dabeli. It is believed that this dish is invented by a resident of Mandvi, Kutch named Keshavji Gabha Chudasama also known as Kesha Malam in the 1960s. Even though it was originated in 1960s, Dabeli has evolved over time and there are different variations of it that one can see in the street food market. However, the true taste of Dabeli can only be found in Kutchi Dabeli. The ready-made masala cannot match the high standards set by Kutch ki Dabeli.

Dabeli has surely become Desi Burger for all the foodies.  It can be considered an evening snack or a quick fix dish as it doesn’t take much time to prepare it.
